Birger Dahl

Birger Dahl was a Norwegian designer and interior architect, considered a pioneer of Scandinavian lighting design in the post -war period. Born in Moss, he studied at the Norwegian State School of Art and Craft (SHKS) in Oslo, where he later became a lecturer and professor. In the years 1945–1957 he was the main designer at Sønnico, where he created iconic lamps such as Dokka and Birdy. Dokka was the first Norwegian lamp that won the gold medal at the Triennale in Milan in 1954, which brought international recognition of Norwegian Emu design. Dahl's style was characterized by pure, geometric forms - steps, cylinders and balls - brown with subtle curves. He avoided unnecessary decorations, focusing on functionality and harmony between the object and its surroundings. His works were presented at international exhibitions, such as "Design in Scandinavia" (1954–1957), and in 1968 he received the prestigious Jacobprisen, the highest Norwegian distinction in the field of design.
