Thinking like an architect but creating like an artist, the designer came up with an exceptionally space-saving design that resembles a contemporary work of art. Despite its graphic outlines,Frame is a multifunctional product that provides space for hanging clothes and other various items.
When opened, the frame slides outwards from the wall, creating lightweight layers of steel tubing. When no longer in use, the structure quietly retracts, returning to its original two-dimensional shape. The product was inspired by the concept of "space within space", which resulted in a design composed of nested geometric shapes.
Cecilia Xinyu Zhang is a Chinese designer living in Norway, specializing in product design, furniture, space and artistic installations. She graduated from the Academy of Design and Crafts at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden. After gaining experience at Marcel Wanders's studio in the Netherlands, in 2016 she founded her own studio in Bergen, and currently runs them in Oslo. Zhang is known for minimalist projects that combine geometric forms with functionality, often creating optical illusions and redefining space perception. Her most recognizable works include: Equant lamp inspired by astronomical geometry, Inverse tables for Munk Collective, Discrete shelf for Roche Bobois and multi -functional hangers Frame and NOOK for Northern.
