Peter Zumthor

Peter Zumthor is a Swiss architect known for minimalist, sensual projects that focus on material, light and emotional reception of space. The son of a carpenter, began his career as a journeyman, and then studied design in Basel and at the Pratt Institute in New York. In 1979 he founded his own studio in Haldenstein, where he works with a small team. His most famous projects include: Therme Vals (1996), Kunsthaus Bregenz (1997), Columbus Museum in Cologne (2007) and the chapel of brother Klaus in Germany (2007). His designs are characterized by simplicity, attention to details and a deep understanding of the context of the place. In 2009 he received the Pritzker Award, and in 2013 the Royal Riba Medal.
