Jorn Utzon

Jorn Ustzon was a Danish architect, best known as the creator of the iconic opera in Sydney - one of the most famous buildings of the 20th century. He was born in 1918 in Copenhagen, and studied architecture at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. His projects combined functionalism with organic forms inspired by nature, Eastern cultures and sailing. In 1957 he won the international competition for the Opera project in Sydney, despite the fact that his concept was significantly ahead of the technical capabilities of that time. Although because of conflicts with the Australian authorities he did not finish the construction, his vision was preserved. Ustzon also designed, among others Dom Bagsværd Kirke and the Can Lis complex in Majorca. In 2003 he received the prestigious Pritzker award. He died in 2008, leaving the heritage of modern architecture full of harmony and expression.
